New research has examined the physical demands that the sport exacts on professional rugby players during games. Results were drawn from research on eight professional teams from the Aviva Premiership league, including Bath, Exeter, Harlequins, Leicester, London Irish, Wasps, Northampton and Sale Sharks.
GPS units were worn by players, enabling more than 300 sets of data from 54 Premiership matches to be collected. The use of GPS technology in elite sport has grown significantly in the last 5 years. It allows for exacting evaluation of the training loads and activity profiles of players in competitive situations on the field. The results of the study will allow individual players to gain information on the physical demands of their specific positions, in order to identify potential injury risk and to monitor relationships between training, competition and fatigue.
