Rugby Stadium in Christchurch

Christchurch, NZ Mayor Bob Parker says that he thinks the AMI stadium is viable to host the Rugby World Cup after the devastating earthquake there. But the International Rugby Board has serious doubts over not just the stadium, but also a possible accommodation shortage and the potential for more big aftershocks, and they are considering moving the games elsewhere.

No final decision has been made, and Parker continues to lobby for the games to remain in Christchurch. It is still not known, however, whether AMI stadium can be repaired in time. An engineer's report will be given to Rugby World Cup Minister Murray McCully on Sunday detailing the extent of damage and needed repairs to the stadium. When Prime Minister John Key visited the stadium yesterday he said there were "mounds and humps everywhere." The playing surface appeared to be a complete mess following the quake, and the Green Party is concerned that reports about the state of the stadium are not being made public.
